Abstract
We carried out this study to evaluate the effect of the sequential hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) using the Estraderm TTSso patch (CIBA-GEIGY Pharmaceutical Co., U.S.A.) along with m droxyprogesterone acetate 5 mg/day for 12 days on the serum lipid profiles in 34 postmenopausal syndrome patients.
We measured the serum lipid profiles of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), LDL/HDL, Cholesterol/HDL, and total cholesterol at the time of pretreatment evaluation and after 3 months¢¥ HRT, respectively.
Pretreatment serum lipid profiles of HDL. LDL, LDL,/HDL, cholesterol/HDL, and total cholesterol levels or ratios were 59.10 ¡¾ 11.89 mg/dl, 112.50 - 10.98 mg/dl, 2.09 ¡¾ 0.79, 3.10 - 0.35, and 197.50 -16.41 mg/dl, respectively.
Posttreatment serum lipid profiles of HDL, LDL, LDL/HDL, cholesterol/HDL, and total cholesterol levels or ratios were 56.10 ¡¾ 9.69 mg/dl, 93.50 ¡¾ 17.46 mg/dl, 1.61 ¡¾ 0.64, 2.46 ¡¾ 0.34, 187.42 ¡¾ 26.78 mg/dl, respectively.
Posttreatment serum LDL levels and cholesterol/HDL ratios following HRT showed the statistically significant differences (p= 0.008) in comparison with pretreatment LDL levels and cholesterol/HDL ratios.
Twenty percent (7/34) of Estraderm patch therapy patients complained of minor skin irritation such as skin eruption at the site of Estraderm patch applied.
In conclusions, transdermal 17-¥â estradiol treatment seemed to bring the favorable effects on the serum lipid profiles in terms of the cardio-protective effect of HRT and was effective to control postmenopausal symptoms and signs in the postmenopausal syndrome patients.
